Don’t Let the Ringing Stop You from Leading a Full Life
Tinnitus (pronounced tin-NY-tus) is a common condition that can cause you to hear a ringing, rushing, or buzzing in your ears. Tinnitus is fairly common and for most people is more annoying than bothersome. While tinnitus is different for each person, it can affect your daily activities and quality of life. When tinnitus starts to affect your concentration, sleep, and enjoyment of life, it’s time to contact the audiologists at A&E Audiology & Hearing Aid Center.
Signs You May Have Tinnitus
Many people assume if they have tinnitus they have hearing loss. It is important to know that tinnitus is not a disease or a cause of hearing loss; tinnitus is a symptom of changes within the auditory pathways. It is, however, a leading indicator of hearing loss, making it important to have a hearing test.
What signs should you be looking for? If you answer yes to any of these questions, it’s a good indication you will want to see an auditory specialist.
- Do you frequently or always hear ringing in your ears?
- Does the sound in your ears bother you or otherwise affect your ability to enjoy daily life?
- Does ringing in your ears interfere with or inhibit your social life or other activities?
- Does the ringing in your ears make you feel angry, confused, or frustrated?
- Do you have trouble sleeping because of the ringing in your ears?
What to Expect at Your Tinnitus Appointment
Doctor visits often come with a bit of anxiety. Knowing what to expect can help put you at ease. At A&E Audiology & Hearing Aid Centers, we want you to feel completely comfortable when you visit our hearing centers, here’s what you can expect during your first visit to our offices.
When you arrive, you’ll be asked to complete several forms related to your health history including forms specifically related to hearing, tinnitus, sound tolerance, and a self-ranking of concerns related to your hearing. The next step is to discuss these forms with our team before we conduct a hearing evaluation. Each evaluation varies based on the type and severity of symptoms but may include any or all of the following:
- Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions
- Most comfortable and uncomfortable listening levels
- Pitch and loudness match for tinnitus
- Minimum masking levels
- Evaluation of residual inhibition of tinnitus
Following the evaluation, we will review your results and discuss the treatment options available to you. Depending on the findings of your evaluation, education, and counseling, hearing aids or cognitive behavior therapy may be recommended. Routine audiometric evaluations to rule out progressive hearing loss and the use of sound therapy may be recommended as well.
Our doctors and office staff are always happy to answer your questions. Our goal is to ensure you understand all of the information being provided so you have a clear understanding of how we will proceed.
