How We Evaluate Your Hearing
Our comprehensive hearing evaluation goes further than a typical hearing screening and gathers information about far more than what you hear. It also considers HOW you hear and WHY you hear the way that you do. Our doctors perform a range of tests to determine your cognitive abilities, how you hear soft speech, and how you hear in loud environments. We perform the following tests to determine your unique hearing situation:
Pure Tone Testing – A basic hearing screening, tones and pitches are played at varying volumes separately in each ear. You will be instructed to either raise your hand or push a button when you hear a sound. The tones and pitches increase in volume until you can hear them.
Bone Conduction Testing – A bone conduction test presents pure tones and is performed by placing a headband around your head and an oscillator behind your ear. The oscillator vibrates and sends the pure-tone sound directly into your cochlea, bypassing the outer and middle ear. This test is important in helping to determine if there is a problem with your outer ear, such as your ear canal, or your middle ear, such as your eardrum or the bones of your middle ear.
Video Otoscopy – An examination of the outer ear, or “external auditory canal,” using an otoscope, this process allows our team to see what’s happening in the ear canal. We will be able to if there is a buildup of cerumen (ear wax), skin cells, or other issues that are impacting your hearing.
Speech Testing – This test measures how well you hear and understand ordinary conversation. You will be asked to listen to and repeat spoken words at varying volumes to determine your speech reception threshold.
Gathering a Complete Picture of How You Hear
At your initial consultation, we will take the time to learn about your medical history, family history, level of noise exposure, and any other health factors that may impact your hearing abilities. We’ll also want to know what type of social environments you are most often in, how you are doing in different hearing situations, and how you are dealing with hearing issues in your life. As your appointment approaches, it’s a good idea to start thinking about these questions.
We know hearing loss affects everyone in the family, so we recommend you bring your spouse or close family member to your consultation. This is a journey you will be going through together and they can give important feedback on your hearing difficulties. This information is helpful in developing the best treatment solution for you.
As part of our comprehensive approach to treatment, we will provide you with educational resources so you can continue learning about your hearing condition and your available treatment options. We will also take the time to answer any questions you or your loved one have about your hearing rehabilitation, our approach to treatment, and anything else that you would like to know about us. Once your consultation and testing are completed, we will provide you with our treatment recommendation and schedule your next visit to our hearing center. We look forward to helping you enjoy the sounds of life again!
